Hello
After writing the last newsletter, I handed the draft over to our team. A few of us added our insights to it before it was finally sent out.
We were all happy about the simple newsletter – full of joy and caring – just to share our excitement and inspiration with everyone who read it. That was what we wanted to see in our regular communication with you.
When we were just sending it out to our contacts that night, the person in charge of actually mailing it out did a test on the contents to see what spam rating we got. He wanted to make sure that our newsletter would not end up in your spam box.
The rating was 11.5 when the guideline was to keep it under 5!
Many positive words like JOY, OPPORTUNITY, ENJOY etc. were all rated as spam words… so how can we write a happy newsletter and keep it under 5?? Should we make it dreadful and negative to bypass the filter?
So he decided to do what he envisaged was a little ‘tweak’ on it. He changed the spelling of those words by inserting this character ’~’ into the words or replacing the words with similar ones. He also made a few ‘minor’ changes because he wanted more people to read it.
When I saw the email in my mailbox in the early next morning, I excitedly opened it although I already knew the contents. This was our first one after all and just seeing it there in the inbox was a great, great feeling.
And then, I could not believe how I felt as I read it.
I cried. And cried. (Maybe ‘entrepreneurs’ should not cry so easily but I often do for very small things – big problems are easy to laugh at). I walked into the office that morning and shared my feeling with the team.
And then I realised how attached I was…
In life, even when we put our heart into something, things can often turn out differently. And when that happens (as it will) we have a choice to be upset or to accept it and take it as a gift.
One gift in this was simple: never again do we have to process things in our head to change the message of our heart. What’s really funny now is that even after those changes, the spam rating had only dropped from 11.5 to 10.2!
Many people would not have received it anyway. But some would still have. We realised that our intention was to really touch those people who happened to read it.
But the biggest gift was to know there was no need to take anything negatively (like the way I reacted). It gave us an opportunity to share and communicate the essence of our organisation among the team. And now…sharing it with you!
And there’s one other gift too. For this issue, our team members stepped up to write one section each. We felt much more connected through this sharing. And guess what the spam rating for this one is! 23!!

Thank you for being part of the second edition of Buy1GIVE1Free newsletter. And thank you all of our Friends who generously took time to send us their comments for the last issue. Amongst other things, it added to the number of children we could share meals with this month! Small actions create more smiles today.
So, this time, what stories can we look into?
The story is, as always, yours.

| Blind to Light |
We met Alex Teh from Blinds Couture in Perth, Australia last year. He came on board with Buy1GIVE1Free when there were not many other businesses involved in Buy1GIVE1Free yet. When we heard about his business, we got really excited.
The business was a blind installation business. So, what makes it so exciting?
Simply this: the company had a passion to give back.
They were starting to receive larger contracts as they built more trust and relationships in the industry. Alex said the main part of business came through word of mouth. The business was growing.
As you know, one of the very special things we do in Buy1GIVE1Free is to take a lot of care to match businesses with Worthy Causes that resonate with the customers of the business. So not surprisingly, when we heard the name ‘Blinds Couture’ the first thing that flashed in our mind (as we always focus on creative match-making) was to match it with an organization that supported blind people.
And then we asked Alex more questions. He told us that his company’s mission was really to provide comfortable environment to people. As he put it, “I’d like to make sure that people who are receiving the privilege of the great environment we create with our products can contribute to someone else’s comfort and joy. We got it. But we hadn’t solved the match yet.
But it didn’t take long. We remembered connecting earlier on with a very passionate man, Anand Bhatia, in Bangalore. One day, he took us to his workshop and showed us all the pictures of children he and his company are supporting through his social enterprise. They have established a non-profit trust to support thousands of children through their business.
The business pumps the profit and labour (all his staff volunteer on their time off!) to make the contribution more effective (in fact, by volunteering the Worthy Cause has ZERO admin cost!). And what precisely do they do?
Well, believe it or not, Anand and his band of volunteers install lighting into village schools. It’s weird; when the Government builds the schools, they have the power grid and lines right there but they don’t make the connection! And why? Because it adds another US$450 to the cost of the school. |
 |
|
So enter Anand and his team. They simply get it done. And how about this: when it’s done, the power is provided for free by the Government.
What’s ALWAYS so powerful (no pun intended) though is the impact something small like this has.
So that we could see that impact firsthand, Anand took us to one of the schools they supported and we met the children. As they were studying, Anand asked the teacher for permission to turn off the light.
All of a sudden, the room was so dark that we could hardly read the textbook they were using (yet this was the middle of the day!). The windows were very small and facing the darker side as to keep the rooms cool in summer. He explained that this was how it used to be a year ago at this school.
We could not believe how dark the room was… But no child complains about it because they don’t know anything better. Schools do not have light…that’s it. That’s their paradigm.
But once they can REALLY see, the learning gets much easier and more fun. Those smiling faces gave us a warm feeling as we left. The light the children now had lit up our hearts.
We introduced the cause to Alex and he really did resonate with the project. It was a perfect match. And as a result, Alex’s Blinds Couture is already making a massive difference. The lighting for one classroom shares the joy with more than 25 children today and it will continue to provide light for many more years to come, giving the joy of learning to literally thousands of children. One household or office receiving a service from Blinds Couture experiences a massive joy of giving. A ‘Blind’ company giving light to children and lighting up its customers' hearts too.
There are still so many schools with no light – thousands of them in Karnataka State on its own. So do let us know if this is a cause you’d feel great about too.

| CSR made easy! |
|
The world of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) is becoming huge. CSR seminars are happening everywhere and articles around CSR appear every day in many publications.
But as long as we perceive that it is about corporate engagement, we may never feel relevant to be part of it (even the employees of those companies). At Buy1GIVE1Free we strongly believe that SMEs (Small to Medium size Enterprises) can also make a difference. And, of course, we know that individuals working together can do that too and make a massive a difference.
Actually, SMEs can also ignite a spark of a new giving concept to spread it massively around the world at least (if not more) than the corporate world can.
We have done some corporate speaking and introduced the ‘B1G1 CSR’ to some large companies. Having many large companies doing B1G1 will start to change the way we give, dramatically. So special thanks to the people who have helped create these opportunities by connecting us to the people in corporate world.
While we continue to work on creating relationships with those great leaders in different industries, we also see the fact that smaller companies make decisions much quicker. Many of the B1G1 business partners around the world are already making a difference in harmonious and perfect ways so that their own stories inspire others every day.
Each one of us – either as an employee, business, company executive, teacher, mother, a child—each one of us can participate in Buy1GIVE1Free giving.
We recently spoke with one of the B1G1 Business partners; Ken Hawkins and he excitedly mentioned that his son wanted to help B1G1 giving spread in their community by telling his teachers and many other people. WOW! So we discussed the idea about creating the kids ambassador pack. Now CSR is becoming really fun and exciting. Do let us know if you’d like to know more for your kids too. The world is really becoming ONE through a simple CSR program!

| Buy1Give1 ‘JOY Card’ Launched |
|
We often use the word ‘IMAGINE” when we want to start thinking outside the square. So let’s imagine this: a card (like a Credit Card) that EVERY TIME you use it to buy something, automatically ‘flips’ a small piece of the transaction into a charitable cause.
No, not points on an airline. But money actually flowing directly to a Worthy Cause to make a difference. Would that be cool? Or would that be cool?
The B1G1 ‘Contribution Card’ (we call it the JOY Card) is now almost up and running. It’s scheduled for release on 5th April.
But you can get up-to-speed on it quickly. Just jump online at www.b1g1.com and go to the B1G1 Card tab. Depending on where we’re at with the launch, you may even be able to get your B1G1 JOY CARD on line. You’ll certainly be able to register your interest! So go to it and do that now.
And then, every time you buy something with your card (a flight, a taxi ride, a meal or whatever it is), a Worthy Cause benefits. We think it adds another important element to Buy1GIVE1Free. All it takes is you.

| Getting it Nailed |
|
Earlier on in your newsletter, you read about the story of Anand Bhatia and the lighting of the schools in India. But it’s only part of the story.
Anand is like many entrepreneurs who are part of B1G1 who really ‘get’ giving. It’s part of his very being.
And you know how it is when you get a new car, you really notice others now driving the same model? Well, the people that study that phenomenon say it’s all part of your RAS—your Reticular Articulation System. Put simply, it means that when something gets into your RAS, you look at the world through a new set of eyes.
Anand’s RAS (and hence what he sees) work overtime when it comes to seeing challenges that can be solved in unique ways. Here’s just one example:
On a visit with Anand to one of the schools now powered by his lighting, I noticed how gracious the children are. As you come within a few metres of their classroom they stand up as one and give you that lovely ‘hands together in prayer’ greeting. And then, they surround you wanting
to shake hands with you and ask you questions.
In the midst of this, Anand turned to me and said, “Did you notice anything about their hands.”Well my RAS wasn’t quite as tuned in as his. “Their hands?” I asked. “Well more specifically their finger nails,” he said.
“Yes, they’re quite long.”
“Precisely,” said Anand, “and therein lies a source of about 30 percent of the disease-related challenges.”
Seeing my still-baffled look, Anand explained. “Well here in the school, you’ll notice that they get the Midday Meals delivered.” (Midday Meals is B1G1 Worthy Cause that feeds upwards of 125,000 poor children a day by delivering the meals to the schools so that the only way they get properly fed is when they also get an education.)
“And the children, like most Indians, eat the meal with their fingers. But since there’s not a great supply of water here, a lot of germs can rest under those long nails. And so gastro problems develop and so on.”
So now, for just $1, Anand’s providing nail clippers to the school to make those nails shorter and the kids healthier. All thanks to a RAS that looks for the smallest things to fix.
It’s like a lot of things really; it’s most often the little things that produce the profound results. And here at Buy1GIVE1Free each day we’re seeing little things that few people notice—and together producing profound impacts.

| WHO is ‘the Giving’ for? |
Why do we all feel so resonant with the concept of ‘giving’?
In Japan there is this old saying, “kindness is not the act for others”. I used to think it meant “Good things we do always come back to us”. The now oft-quoted ‘Law of Attraction’ is all about feeling good. Doing ‘good’ creates good feelings and good feelings create success and abundance.
And then one day, I thought, “Actually, it could mean it is not really good to be kind to others…? Because if we just did something for others without knowing the implication and the long-term results, people could become dependent on being given and it does not empower them.”
Well, I still do not know the answer to this. It could mean either way… But the only thing I know is that when we see the smiles of others, we feel good. When we do or say something against others and create conflict, it feels unpleasant. So, isn’t it good enough reason to still be kind and giving to others? Because we all really do want to feel good right now.
CSR is a complex subject creating lots of different perspectives. But maybe we can make it simpler and easier by just doing what we can do and what we love to do right now today, following our heart – every second, every day and in every way.
Welcome to the world of Buy1GIVE1Free!

| Buy1GIVE1Free Marketing Tips |
| We look forward to sharing with you some of the key marketing tips in each newsletter. We would love to hear your ideas, too! story@b1g1.com. |
- T-Shirts
This is a practical marketing tool for any business. It works best when used as free give-a-ways at events and expo's when it is used to generate excitement and is used in the collection of contact details. On the front you have all you standard branding and messaging and on the back you have your Buy1GIVE1Free marketing message such as "Did you know you have fed a child today. Ask me how." or "Give me your business card so you can plant a tree". The possibilities are endless.
|
 |
- Coffee Cups and Plates
This idea works really well for food businesses. When you order your next lot of plates or cups you get them to add your marketing message on them. "Every time you dine with us you feed a child". So when someone empties their cup of coffee at the bottom of the cup they see the message. Not only is this cool it has high impact and creates an instant conversation subject.
