Newsletter Issue 20 - February 10

Hello, Seed

February 2010 turned out to be a great month full of celebrations. Lunar (Chinese) New Year and Valentine's Day fell on the same day too.

While the festive feelings spread in the air, we happened to miss the deadline of our monthly newsletter. Ooops! (But like many things, there's a gift in this as you'll see in a moment.)

We could come up with many excuses: like we've been busy with many events in Australia and New Zealand. Or we could blame the shorter month of February + the public holidays in Singapore that took a chunk off our working days...

But guess what. There is no excuse! We simply haven't NAILED it as a part of our REGULAR monthly routine that we automatically do on time every month. It's so simple. And that leads me to this (and almost to the gift)...

Last week, I was invited to speak at TEDxSingapore (one of the independently organised TED events). I shared a speech titled: A Habit Worth Spreading. The audience at TEDx really resonated with the idea.

You see, all the while giving is still something we might have to remind ourselves to do, we are only in the process of turning it into our habit.Masami

However, when it becomes something we don't even have to think about doing - when it becomes totally automatic - we just do it. And then it finally becomes our habits - part of who we really are.

We believe that the role of B1G1 Giving is to play a part in making our giving really a natural part of who we are, how we live every day.

So, we would also like to work on turning 'Sharing the latest B1G1 news on time' into our habit this year. Because we would love to work with you more to establish this wonderful giving habit: A Habit Truly Worth Spreading.

The ideas in the news below might just inspire you to do that too.

Making 'Harmony' a habit
Environment that gives

There's a little question that the environment we surround ourselves with can impact how we feel and how we act. We often use the example of Google's offices in Munich, Germany, as an example of what's possible in the workplace.

It's the perfect place for creativity and innovation isn't it?

And now, Harmony is the brilliantly-chosen name for a series of buildings on Australia's Gold Coast, not just because of the fusion east and west in their design but because the habit of giving is now central to the project too.

Project creator George Lee explains it this way:

"We've always had a passion for giving, for wanting to do the right thing. So, for every sale at Harmony, a homeless family in Asia gets shelter forever. But that for us is just the start of it. We're now working to get giving embedded into body corporate fees and even into monthly rentals; for example linking rentals to giving kids access to water"

Harmony is a GREAT example of what B1G1 stands for - recognising that giving is a natural part of who we are as human beings and then integrating that into the very way we live. You can see more on Harmony via video link right here.

Reading with profound purpose
Wellness created while giving more

More and more authors get the idea of B1G1. And perhaps even more importantly, they are sharing the message of giving with their readers. Just like each story in a book has a unique theme, each author selects an unique giving message that resonates.

We've come to know recently of two books - giving books actually - that are giving back to rainforest habitats from every copy sold.

Let's look a little deeper.

The Wheel of Life
When we feel we are stuck in life, one simple insight might allow us to get out of the tough pattern instantly. But unless we invite new ideas, we might be stuck for a long time. And that simple insight might come if we just asked, "Do I have a balanced approach?"

B1G1 Business Members John and Linda Ballis have created a wonderful book that is designed to help us balance our lives and become more happy, more fulfilled and more successful.

The 'Wheel of Life's 8 Keys to success' is a book that looks at 8 key areas of our lives. It acknowledges how easy it is to become unbalanced in one or more of these areas and then goes on to show us how to rebalance them. The result? Our lives flow and we become much happier and fulfilled.

We have always felt it is extremely important to give back in any way you can, both with time and money. To us it was always a simple decision to give back part of the proceeds of the book as a way of saying thank-you for everything we have received in life" - Linda and John Ballis

Giving effectively
Turning 'Global Concern' into 'Global Solution'

You probably know that Africa has some of the most complex problems of poverty,  injustice and inequality in the world. What you might NOT know though is this: whilst a lack of water is one of Africa's biggest problems, it is not complex. And even better, you could help solve it today.

For over 25 years, Global Concern has been providing much needed support for disadvantaged communities to create for themselves a better way of life.

Global Concern works in Malawi and Zambia assisting locals from the poorest villages gain access to fresh drinking water for their families. Many of these villages suffer from diarrhoea and other easily preventable diseases that result in their death. Providing fresh water prevents sickness, saves lives and gives something every person on the planet should have access to.

And here's the 'YOU-CAN-HELP-SOLVE-IT-TODAY' part: staggeringly, for just US$5, through B1G1 you can give access to clean water for one person for life. Take a look at the project 'Water Well' here.

The impact of giving is not about how much money we give, it is what really happens through our genuine caring and through creating an automatic HABIT through the power of B1G1 transaction-based giving (or 'embedded gratitude'). This is where we all make a difference habitually; every second, every day and in every way.

And that's the gift.
