Most weekends I try to get started on at least one book. Some I can start and then get back to over the course of a few weeks. Others I've just got to keep reading.
This weekend I got one in the 'other' category. I'd actually had the book for 4 weeks but hadn’t read the inside flap properly. Had I done that, I would have been writing about the book 4 weeks ago.
The reason? It's brilliant: probably THE best book on Social BUSINESS Entrepreneurship and so-called 'Conscious Capitalism' I’ve yet read.
It's called 'Be The Solution' – and although it's written by Michael Strong with major contributions from Whole Foods Market CEO John Mackey, it also features key pieces from people like Nobel Peace Prize Winner and Grameen Bank Founder, Muhammad Yunus
THE best advice I can give anyone this week is 'go get the book and read it'. It will re-define how you think about business (and maybe even life). It's so hard to pick out any one 'stand-out' piece because there are just so many. But one I think you'll love is the chapter called 'Creating a New Paradigm for Business' by John Mackey where he outlines the Purpose of Business.
Be warned though – there’s no 'fluff' in this – Mackey knows precisely what he's talking about – in 1978 he began Whole Foods Market they had $45,000 in capital and sales of $250,000 in the first year. By 2006 they had sales of $5.6 billion ($7.9 Billion in 2008), net profits of $200 Million and a market capitalisation of over $8 Billion.
You can get the Mackey chapter right here but that's only half the story. And even if you're nowhere near those numbers in the previous paragraph yet, you'll love the book. Grab it, read it, let me know via comments here OR via the discussion boards on the B1G1 Global Village .
